Akalapuzha is one of the popular eco-tourism spots in Kozhikode. It is a charming little place with beautiful hills and mountains that stretch out in the distance. There is even a grassland that stands right in the middle of these rivers. They are attractive to tourists.

The name Akalapuzha was derived from "Akalamulla Puzha," meaning "river with distance." The Payyoli Canal (200 meters, 660 feet) connects Akalapuzha Lake with its tributary, Kuttiyadi Puzha. It is situated between the Koyilandy and Payyoli municipalities and the Thikkodi and Keezhariyur villages. It flows towards the Korapuzha River as the Muthambi River.

It is a major tourist spot with boat services and leisure activities. This lake is shallow and home to many fish, including shellfish. The Karimeen (Pearl Spot) nurtured in the Akalappuzha Backwaters is often an tasty fish delicacy. Apart from enjoying the natural beauty, boating facilities are also available here.Fishing using fishing rods from the Nelliyadi Kadavu Bridge and Kettummal Road is a popular activity among the people around this region.

Pedal boats are available, and boating is done in the afternoon. The project also aims to expand tourism potential by including rowing boats, kayaks, and canoes. The Akalapuzha boating point can be reached by traveling 6 km (3.7 mi) from Payyoli Town and 5 km (3.1 mi) from Thikkodi.
